Our "ABC Writing Prompts" page will give young authors some great ideas for their own ABC book. This can be done in several different ways. For a quick writing exercise, give students of any age, a particular letter to develop and contribute one page for a class book. For a more involved project have students write their own alphabet book complete with illustrations. Here are some great ABC Books to get kids thinking.
Summer Stinks

Summer Stinks , by Marty Kelly, provides a new twist to the traditional ABC format. It includes a sentence for each letter of the alphabet accompanied by a whimsical picture that portrays how a boy spent his summer vacation. For example, “S is for Sunburn that’s painful and pink". "T is for thirsty; there’s nothing to drink.” You’ll notice it’s written in rhyming form, which fits this fun book. It will get your students thinking and make them smile too.
Prompt Ideas
Have students make their own ABC book: "How I spent my Christmas Holiday", "My Family ABC Book", "Camping with the ABC’s", etc.
The Z was Zapped

The Z Was Zapped , by Chris Van Allsburg, presents a 26 act play starring the alphabet. It relates the sad tale of a particular mishap suffered by each letter of the alphabet. For example, one letter was nearly drowned, another tied up; can you guess which letter suffered which? The illustrations in this book are masterfully and artistically done.
Alphabet Under Construction

Mouse is very busy in Alphabet Under Construction , authored by By Denise Fleming, as he constructs the alphabet. He needs to airbrush the A, carve the C... and so on. The text is simple and yet the word choice is excellent and creative.
Alphabet City

Alphabet City is a wordless ABC book and yet is one of my favorites to share with a class. They love the illustrator’s creativity in finding the letters of the alphabet in urban settings. The paintings in this book were created with pastels and watercolors and will get your students looking for the letters of the alphabet in their surroundings. Can you see the A in a construction sawhorse or a Z in a fire escape? You will if you look at this book.
The Hidden Alphabet

Written by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, The Hidden Alphabet is another one of my favorite ABC writing prompts. The first page has what appears to be a picture of an arrowhead but when the flap is lifted the capital A is revealed. It continues through the alphabet and is a fun read, especially for the younger student.
