The Magic of BIC

by J. McKay
author of

While I would be flattered if anyone out there noticed, under the rational assumption that many of you would not have, the daily-writing-prompt blog stalled a little bit last week. That’s not to say I didn’t have anything to say or any time to write. Yes, sometimes things come faster and easier than others, and yes busy is as busy does, but time or topic was also not what was lacking.

What was lacking was BIC. A guest lecturer at a professional development conference related to my work talked about what separates truly accomplished writers or scholars of any field from those that flounder and then fade is BIC. She crescendoed up this thing called BIC for quite a while, until we all weren’t sure what this magical compound was but sure that once we had it our lives would never be the same. If she had then told us, operators were standing by and if we ordered now she would double our shipment of BIC, there would have been a mad scramble to be the first to dial.

BIC is not a pill, elixir or pixie dust. It’s an acronym [remember I’m in education, we love acronyms]. BIC stands for Butt In Chair [Behind or Bum would also work depending on the sensitivity of your ears or eyes]. Her point was that you will never write until you sit down to write. We often over complicate productivity. Something won’t get done if we don’t do it. She recommended that we take the "when, where and what" out of parking our BIC. She advised that we schedule our BIC hour and we keep it like we would keep an appointment with our dear friend, rich uncle or demanding boss.

Maybe you have another name for it, but are you a BIC success story? If not you should start with me and we can share stories with what does and doesn’t help in setting a sustainable BIC routine. I’ll keep you posted but would also love to hear from you through the comments below.
