Farm Safety
Farm safety is the focus of this writing prompt. The target audience may be rather narrow in scope, but the topic can be modified easily to include those students who live in a more urban environment. Besides, its very relevant for my 6th grade students and the farming community where they live. Which is why I wrote it... Coach Hart
Green acres is the place to be. Farm living is the life for me! So goes the first few lines of the theme song for a 60's vintage TV sitcom. Today's farm environment is much different and much more dangerous, in terms of safety, than the one depicted by this popular television show. Being kicked by a cow may hurt for a short time, but will certainly not cause the life threatening injuries that are capable of being inflicted by today's modern machinery. Many of the students in our school live on, or near, a farm/ranch. We enjoy fresh air, acres of open land, and many wonderful opportunities for work and play, etc. But with the good life comes added responsibilities. Have you had any experiences (first or second hand) that have taught you the importance of being "Farm Smart" when it comes to being safe and responsible around modern day agricultural equipment? Share your thoughts on this important topic! Note - If you don't live on a farm, you can still write about experiences you have with safety issues in the community where you live.
