A Monster Who Wanted to Dance The delightful illustrations of Frank was a Monster who Wanted to Dance , written and illustrated by Keith Graves, will get your students attention and students of all ages will fall in love with the rhyming rhythm of the text. The story of Frank dancing his heart out, or at least his brain, eyeball and arm will leave you smiling and tapping your own foot. Prompt Ideas Have your students follow the pattern of this story by writing a quick Halloween poem and then watch as they break out of their shell by illustrating it into a children’s book.
Inside a House that is Haunted Before your students hear Inside a House That is Haunted , have them write their own Halloween story based solely on the cover picture. Ask, “What happens inside a house that is haunted?” The cover page (Hardback edition) alone will get them started. It will be fun to see where the illustration took each of them in their story. After having your class authors share their stories read them, “Inside a House that is Haunted”. This story builds sentence upon sentence and has a fun ending. The repetition will catch everyone’s attention and by the end don’t be surprised if everyone is repeating, “Inside a House that is Haunted” in their best monster voice.
Room on the Broom In a Room on the Broom , a witch’s generosity of sharing her broomstick gets her in a frightful situation until her newfound friends help her out. In gratitude the witch brews up a ‘super’ broomstick with something special for each of her travelers. The text of this story is also in rhyme but don’t be fooled, even in rhyme, watch for the details that help flush out the story. Prompt Ideas A Halloween story that shows true friendship. What is your favorite Thanksgiving dish? Tell about its taste, smell, texture, appearance, etc. Make us all want some now. What are you Thankful for and why?
Too Many Pumpkins As a little girl, Rebecca Estelle and her family help pinchpennies by eating pumpkins baked, steamed and cooked in a variety of ways.
