The Bear and the Two Travelers

While two men were traveling, they came across a bear that looked very viscous. Since they were so frightened, one traveler climbed up a tree and concealed himself in the branches. Quickly, the bear started sniffing and smelling the other traveler who remained on the path. The traveler held his breath. He feigned the appearance of death. The bear left as he whispered, “I will leave you alone because I will not touch a dead body.” After the bear was gone, the traveler descended from the tree. He humorously asked what the bear had whispered. Responding to the question, the traveler answered, “Never travel with a friend who will desert you at the approach of danger.” Misfortune tests the sincerity of friends, like in the story of the two travelers.
